Military Veterans - Priority Care

Are you a Military Veteran (Ex-Armed Forces)?

The UK Government has pledged to support Military Veterans with priority NHS care.

Who is defined as a veteran?

'A veteran is someone who has served in the armed forces for at least one day in the regular or reservist forces.'

There are around 4.5m veterans in the UK.

When servicemen and women leave the armed forces, their healthcare is the responsibility of the NHS.

All veterans are entitled to priority access to NHS hospital care for any condition as long as it's related to their service, regardless of whether or not they receive a war pension.

Veterans are encouraged to tell their GP about their veteran status in order to benefit from priority treatment if appropriate. Health related issues for veterans can manifest in a number of ways.

If you are a Military veteran, please let reception, your GP or nurse know so we can update your medical records.

 

 

BLUE MONDAY IS ON IT'S WAY - Monday 21st January 2019

Here we are at the start of another brand New Year and for some, the January blues may be kicking in.

After the fun of the festive season and the initial excitement of entering 2019, the buzz is starting to wear off as we all head back to work, the weather isn't particularly uplifting and New Year's resolutions? Well, they may have already slipped.

But worry not as there could be a perfectly reasonable explanation if you are feeling less than chirpy on January 21.

The day has become known as Blue Monday and the 'most depressing day of the year'.

In 2005, British psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall came up with a formula to calculate why we feel a little blue on that one day, which generally falls on the third Monday of January every year.

 

The formula is:

[W+(D-d)]xTQ/MxNA.

Confused? Us to. But here's what it all means:

  • W = Weather
  • d = Debt
  • T = time since Christmas
  • Q = time since failing New Year's resolutions
  • M = low motivational levels
  • Na = low motivational levels
 

 

But now you know the day is approaching, why not flip it on its head and make it a positive Monday instead.

To help, the Samaritans are encouraging people to participate in Brew Monday and encourage people to talk.

The charity have been championing this for two years as a way of getting people together with their friends, family or colleagues over a brew whilst also raising vital funds for Samaritans.

So why don't you watch that film you have been desperate to see for months, finish the book that you have been telling yourself to read for ages, book the holiday you have been dreaming about or head out on a winter walk and banish those January blues.

Childline (0800 1111) runs a helpline for children and young people in the UK. Calls are free and the number won’t show up on your phone bill.


PAPYRUS (0800 068 41 41) is a voluntary organisation supporting teenagers and young adults who are feeling suicidal.


Depression Alliance is a charity for people with depression. It doesn’t have a helpline, but offers a wide range of useful resources and links to other relevant information. http://www.depressionalliance.org/


Students Against Depression is a website for students who are depressed, have a low mood or are having suicidal thoughts. Bullying UK is a website for both children and adults affected by bullying. http://studentsagainstdepression.org/


The Sanctuary (0300 003 7029) helps people who are struggling to cope - experiencing depression, anxiety, panic attacks or in crisis. You can call them between 8pm and 6am every night.

Patient Notice - A New Way To Book Appointments

 
From 19/11/2018 this surgery will be introducing a Telephone Triage Appointment system.
 
With this appointment system, our experienced and dedicated Practitioners now Triage all requests for an appointment with a doctor through a telephone consultation in the first instance.
 
This simple change provides improved access to ‘on the day’ appointments and ensures that those patients who need to be seen can be seen SAME DAY where necessary.
 
The new system enables us to talk directly with our patients the same day they call, placing us in the best position to allocate an appointment according to clinical need (both in terms of urgency and with the most appropriate clinician).

Weekend GP and Nurse Services

 

Can’t find the time to see a GP or nurse during normal surgery hours? Why not visit the Thurrock Health Hubs.

The Thurrock Health hubs offer GP and nurse appointments every weekday evening and Saturday and Sunday mornings. There are five Health Hubs in total– Corringham, Tilbury, South Ockendon, Purfleet and Grays – each with a single GP and other health professionals, including practice nurses.

All patients registered with a GP practice in Thurrock can make use of the service, and you can attend any of the hubs. All you need to do is contact your GP practice and specify the hub where you would like to book your appointment.

The Hubs in Grays, Tilbury and Corringham are open seven days a week; the hubs in South Ockendon and Purfleet alternate, but together provide a seven day service. You must book an appointment to attend, there is no drop-in service. For a full breakdown of times, please see the timetable below:

Self-Test Blood Pressure GP Practice

 
Thurrock residents are able to test their blood pressure at selected local GP surgeries in the Thurrock area.
 
You’ll be able to test yourself with the support of healthcare professionals in the waiting area and receive results instantly.
 
 
Risk Factors
 
There are a number of factors that can increase your risk of high blood pressure. You are at greater risk if you:
 
  • Are over 65
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Smoke, drink too much alcohol or drink too much caffeine-based drinks
  • Are of African or Caribbean descent or have a relative with high blood pressure
  • Don’t do enough exercise
  • Eat too much salt
  • Don’t get much sleep or have disturbed sleep
